TSPTR words...Many climbers, hikers and West Coast folk were mightily inspired by the mythos of JRR Tolkien s Middle Earth during the late 1960s and 70s - from the mountainous homes of the Elves, the recreational use of 'Pipe Weed' and most importantly the connection with nature itself - his characters became icons of the Hippie generation. 'Frodo Lives!' pin badges can clearly be seen being worn by Yosemite climbers in footage from the Stonemasters documentary Valley Uprising. Gandalf was also a favorite, his image used in numerous Head Shoppe advertisements at the time.
