Guion S. “Guy” Bluford was the first African American to go to space on August 30, 1983, as a member of the crew aboard the third flight of the space shuttle Challenger. Bluford had previously served as a pilot in the Vietnam War before joining NASA. He said he felt the awesome responsibility of being a role model to black Americans and famously became an advocate for environmentalism, “I’ve come to appreciate the planet we live on. We’re a small ball in a large universe. It’s a very fragile ball but also very beautiful. You don’t recognise that until you see it from a little farther off.”
